A relative had one many years ago. They are beautiful if kept properly or the ugliest dog you've ever seen when not. Graceful, elegant and somewhat fragile. However, you better be willing to do a lot of work with it. Grooming must be done everyday. That coat is hard to keep up with. They do also have a history of being snappy. Socialize it early. Like all tall dogs they have hip problems so make sure you have the parents tested. They are also very fast and enjoy a good run. Good Luck.

I know someone who owned 5 show line Afghan hounds.. they are A LOT of work.. If you have had sight hounds before you are better than most for them.. but they are more work than most sight hounds.. That fur is a mess if not groomed constantly.. you need a LOT of yard.. and must have like 8 ft fencing around your property.. NEVER allow it to wander offleash.. These dogs run faster than you.. and will be in 10 miles away in minutes.. (if they don't get hit by a car).. They are expensive, they are tall dogs.. their growth needs to be monitored, diet needs to be precise.. (they grow so fast that if not done EXACTLY right the bones will not be strong enough, or the joints will have problems).. They are fairly smart, but they are hounds.. sight hounds are ruled by sight.. if they see something.. be it a squirrel.. a cat.. a car that's far off.. they are GONE.. no calling will get them to return.. they may wander back, but normally they are likely to get lost.. since they aren't really watching where they are going.. and don't have the strongest noses...

Mostly though, it's the grooming.. that is a killer.. (the lady I knew did it herself.. but she went to school for it.. 6 hours PER dog each week and that was for normal grooming, not show standard)

Afgan hounds need a lot of grooming! I know one that does dog agility. He is big and pretty but there isn't a whole lot in his head. They are pretty soft dogs and need to be trained very positively. They are pretty wimpy. Just make sure to really research and see if this is the right breed for you. You can look for a rescue. They can give lots of information and help you find the perfect dog for you!

I know they require quite a bit of grooming. All that long hair is difficult to keep nice without loads of brushing and combing.

You should rescue one. If you rescue a dog that's older, you won't have to deal with the chewing/peeing on you carpet phase.
