Maybe I'm overprotective but I'm not gonna give my kids gum until they are over 7 at least. We watch a 2yo litle boy and his mom gives him gum!!! Every time he chews it for like 30mins then he swollows it. Then she gives him more!!! He always swollows it, but she is not the least bit concerned. He comes to us at 8:00 am with Gum already. We have told her that the kids cannot have gum here so he has him spit it out when she brings him but he screams for it after for like 30mins. Its almost like she doesnt want to listen to him cry for it so she gives it to him and makes us deal with it after she leaves him. The no gum rule has been in effect for like 4 year now. We are not gonna change the rules for him, How would you handle this?

The exact same way you did. She needs to abide by your rules, especially if she continues to leave her Son for you to watch.

I don't understand, why the Mother gives the child gum. We all need all he is going to do is swallow it. Some folks, need to take parenting 101 course, some thing are just plain common sense, something this Mother is lacking.

That is definately not the worst parenting story I have heard. I look after a 2 year old that gets gum all the time, but she doesn't swallow it. I would tell the parent that you are concerned about him swallowing it and that it may affect his health and say it a concerning way, and if get no reaction from the parent, then leave it alone. "You can give the peolpe the information, what they do with that information is entirely up to them." Just keep enforcing the "no gum" rule in your house and forget about it.

Well everyone has different rules when it comes to taking care of children. Personally I would never give my 2 year old chewing gum. One because its not good for them. Two because its a choking hazard. If I was you, I would just enforce your rule and explain to the mother your NO GUM rule and tell her to not even let him on your property with gum in his mouth. Explain your beliefs and let her know how you feel. It is her responsibility as a mother to do what is best for her own child, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with it in your own home.

It saort of depends on the child. Weird as this may sound my 3 year old understood at 15 months how to chew gum and to give it to me when he was finished. We used it to help him teeth. I know weird and probably very wrong and dangerous. Now he has no interest in gum anymore

Two year olds shouldn't have gum because it's a choking hazard. Swallowing gum is not going to hurt the child, that is only a myth.
I would just stick to my guns, that's all you can do. Don't you just love parents=)

Gum is a choking hazzard for small children. It's also not good for the digestive system.
