James 2:2-6
For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; [3] And ye have respect to him that wears the good clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: [4] Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? [5] Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? [6] But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
You don't want to step on other feet and make them feel inadequate, since they cannot wear fancy clothes, do we?
I agree.
I have not a problem with suits, but I believe you should wear acceptable attire, not with Armani suits that make the poor in Christ feel worthless. I can't afford suits, it doesn't mean I can't dress acceptable.

I am by no means a Jesus basher. I am extremely opposed to the idea of getting all dressed up to go to church. God looks at the heart, and other than that the clothing be modest, there should be no church dress. It causes too much attention to be focused on the outward and everyone is looking around to see what everyone else is wearing. Church needs to be a place where you can bring people and they feel comfortable in whatever they are wearing. I won't go to a church where the clothes people have on is an issue. It's superficial and distracting.

I want to start out by saying that I hate wearing dresses and skirts, but when I do wear one, I don't think its appropriate not to wear pantyhose.
That being said, I've been to churches where women are required to wear dresses, and I spent most of the service fighting with my hose and worrying about if my skirt had ridden up while I was sitting down, instead of enjoying the service.
When I go to my church, I never show up on Sunday mornings wearing jeans ... but I do often wear khakis or black dress pants. That way, after praise and worship, I can settle into my seat and concentrate on listening to the message and taking notes.
I agree that we should dress respectfully for church, but I don't see any reason why we can't be comfortable.

Greetings ! Funny I should log on and see this first thing :)
I'm a music director at a Unity church, and this very issue came up - particularly relating to our young people, who tend to dress in what they wear to school. The trend these days is kinda' hippie garb, leggings with skirts, jeans, t's, whatever.
I was asked to speak to the ones that perform with us musically - - -
- - - to get them to 'dress it up' a little more - - and , really, I just could not bring myself to do it, and won't.. I am so honored that they deign to give of their time and talent, and they do it with such humility and sincerity -
I honestly don't give a crap what they wear, as long as it's clean, mended, and does'nt show too much skin to upset old folks.
Betcha God, or Spirit, or Whatever-Name-You-Choose does'nt have an agenda on that either.
We have a wonderful, inspiring folk-style band, and people love it. Out of an entire congregation of over 100, only 2 people have ever made a fuss over our attire (most of us wear jeans and a nice shirt or t's) - both of them people who tended to whine about everything anyway, tee hee !
. Oh well - - - I guess it depends on the overall tone of the church. I do see your point. I would think, in that case, majority rules - ?
Great topic, thanks for posting this :) *bless* Sj

I wear professional wear during the week, and have attended churches whose members are mostly blue collar. When I attend those churches, I do not wear my best because I think it would draw attention to myself, as though I meant to look better off than they are. Rather than offend anyone, I dress more like they dress. If I attend a church where people dress up more, I follow suit. You are right: it is what is in the heart that is important.

The usual attire in an LDS Church is coat and tie with white shirt for men and dresses or skirts with modest blouses for women.
Revealing clothes are not recommended. This standard is universal in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have seen visitors--investigators--come to church dressed in jeans, shirt, and tennis shoes, and they are never turned away.
We in the LDS Church feel it is most important to revere the place of worship as reverential as we can get. Dressing appropriately is one way to do that.

Modest apparel. We are going to worship God and should not distract others from worship by the provocativeness of our dress. Whether you should say something I don't know. I'd talk with your parents or teen leaders or pastor about it. The leaders of the church should take the lead on this issue. The responsibility shouldn't have to fall on you.

The point of church is worship in spirit and in truth. Worship is God-centered, not man-centered. The focus is spiritual, not physical. Respect is bowing the heart, not the head.

God does not care about our clothes. it has nothing to do with our clothes. The bible tells us that unbelievers worry about such things. a sign of respect for who?? Does God even notice clothes?? Making an effort to show respect? i just do not understand how wearing nicer clothes shows more respect. . i really don't.
