I parboil my potatoes and then peel and slice them. Make a thin white sauce and add some cheese and dice onions. Layer the potatoes in a greased casserole then a layer of the white sauce, then more potatoes and more white sauce, etc. for a total of 3 or 4 layers...ending with white/cheese sauce on top. Bake in the oven at 350 F for about 1/2 hour, until heated through and lightly browned. I change the temp and time if need be, based on what else is in the oven...like meatloaf at 375 so reduce the time on the potatoes.

I would think that the answer to this would be in the manner in which the parent of that individual prepared scalloped potatoes. If box-made, then most probably no, but if they grew up with home made, then I am sure they not only are aware but probably prefer them.

I mix some butter or margarine and flour to make a paste. Then I blend in milk. Once it thickens I add cheese to it. I mix in the potatoes and cook in the oven for an hour.
