I am so fed up, I almost want to stop driving completely. This has happened to me at least 4 times in the past few months, and I am afraid that I am going to get into an accident. Basically, I will be driving on the freeway going at the speed limit (usually 55-65) and someone will be on the ramp to merge, and they will not slow down at all, and just come right at me! Just 20 mins ago, a truck merged at the exact moment that I was right next to them, and I had to go into the other lane a little to avoid them! Don't get me wrong, I always let people in whenever possible, but when I am going at least 55, and have an older car that can't stop on a dime, there is nothing I can do except keep going. I feel that I'm not doing anything wrong, but I keep almost getting into accidents. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Actually, maybe I should have given more details. The freeway that I go on most is a two lane freeway, and I often go in the right lane because the people in the left lane like to go around 70 mph.

Defensive driving is the key--you know there is a ramp coming--so get over ahead of time--and after you pass--safely get back if you choose to. There is no explanation to the bad driving you describe--but as a good defensive driver, you want to avoid all situations that can lead to an accident. Think ahead--look ahead---drive according to conditions---stay away from groups of cars--nothing gained from being ahead of everybody----stay cool and good luck to you.

If the left lane is clear, you move over to let someone in. If not, both you and the merging car have to allow for each other. If it looks like the person on the ramp isn't slowing or speeding up, it is incumbent upon you to slow down or speed up to give him the hole he seems determined to take. Many people never learn to merge properly, and the smarter of the two drivers has the last chance to avoid the collision.

Be aware of what's happening around your vehicle all the time. Use your mirrors often. Check farther ahead, not just the car in front of you. Glance early at the top of the on ramps to check for traffic. If you have room, safely move into the left traffic lane. Don't wait til the last minute to make a decision. Be the intelligent one....if someone is a jerk give him/her all the room he/she needs.

you are the problem, drive with the flow of traffic and judge your car for the merger's, you have enough time to either get ahead of them or slow down and let them in front of you. If it's too hard, either don't take the freeway, or stop driving. If traffic is going 70, you should be going 70, get off, or stay in the right lane and deal with being a traffic problem.

When traffic is merging you should move to the left lane if it is safe to do so
