after all, isn't this the message they send from another of their imaginary friends?

my point is, one does not need some sky-god-given morality to live peacefully or tolerantly. one simply needs the laws and rules set forth by man himself, which is exactly what we have always done, only now, our law enforcement officials wear badges and guns instead of robes and crucifixes...

Perhaps the ones who struggle with it do so because they can't be good for goodness sake.

Where does the goodness come from? Where does the ingrained ability to discern right from wrong come from? It comes from God. The laws set forth by man very closely resemble the ones set forth by God. Ever heard of the Ten Commandments? Thou shalt not kill, though shalt not steal, etc? Man has just conveniently chosen to ignore those laws of God which interfere with our free time..."OH NO, I can't go to church Sunday! I might miss the ball game on TV!" Man has restructured God's laws to accommodate his laziness & his self-righteousness. I'm not that into robes & crucifixes since I'm not Catholic, but this I know with all certainty...if we had more MEN OF GOD we would need less OFFICIALS WITH BADGES & GUNS.

I certainly don't mean to imply all Christians are this way -- but I think that some of them really don't see how one can arrive at the logical conclusion that some things are ethical and others aren't. That's why they need their rules pre-packaged for them, because without an outside authority they would have no ethical foundation for themselves. That's why so many people who call themselves Christians are openly homophobic, love the idea of capital punishment, openly express hatred for other faiths...etc. They have no moral compass of their own.

dojo: Yep ... the legal system is rife with loop holes, crooked lawyers, "a law for the rich" (remember O.J. ?), cops who have no backing from the people of society... are you kidding ? The "rights" of the criminal are paramount in today's society !!! And you, even, suggest the "notion of one being good" is ludicrous?

It would seem that if it were not for god, most Christians would feel free to run around doing all sorts of evil things. They stay in line because they fear god. They don't understand the concept of good for "goodness sake."

because that lessens the need for their god. And they can't argue around it.

See richard proved my point. He assumes that good has to be directly related to god, WHY? These people are crazy.

This "logic" is laughable. Where do you think goodness comes from? You? No, goodness comes from God. It's the very essence of his character and one of his last remaining fingerprints on our corrupted world. When you do something good it's because of God, not in spite of him. It comes directly from the conscience he gave you.
