1) if you already know you like an author, look for more of their books
2) the same goes for genres
3) check out your school/ public library and keyword search one of your interests
4) get recommendations from friends
5) go to a bookstore/ library and pull out books that seem interesting. read the back, and if it sounds good, read a bit or all of the first chapter. if you still like it, get it
6) look at your schedule to see how busy you are. if you're going to be out from 6 am to 12 am and then sleep the rest of the time, don't choose a book like Great Expectations. go for a simper and quicker read

I skim through the back of a book I liked which usually have other series that are from the same company or seller. When I have the time to go to a bookstore, I look at all the book title that sounds familiar and skim through it, if it looks reasonable then I read the back. If they win me both times, then I buy and read.

I ask my friends, or go to the library. Type a genre that interests you into the search category of your library's online catalog (if they have one), and see what you can find.
If you want a good book to read, try 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is amazing.

Look on new books shelves at library
Read reviews of books
Look at favorite call numbers to see what books have come in on those topics.
Look at books other readers have left on library tables
Look at books above and below shelves I commonly look at.
Look to see if authors I like have come out with new books.
Look to see if a topic mentioned in one book has books that cover the topic more completely.
Curiousity.

When in doubt be a black hole. Envelope anything that crosses your path. Works for me anyhow.
