I hate my friend's cat. It'll hop up into your lap, rub it's face all over you, purr and basically act like it wants to be petted.

Then, out of nowhere, it'll suddenly turn, bite your hand and run away. WTF.

I actually wanted a cat until I babysat hers. Do all cats do this?

No. This cat is either badly raised (never learned not to bite when playing) or, more likely, has been abused and traumatized. Most cats do not do this. Don't let this one cat put you off. A well-raised cat -- and I do NOT mean a cat who is physically punished for "being bad," that is just abuse and trauma -- won't bite very often. You will get the occasional scratch and even bite, but it's a rare thing, and usually comes from a cat either getting too enthusiastic during play and forgetting to be restrained, or someone doing something he doesn't like, such as rubbing his belly or yanking his tail.

Don't hate your friend's cat. I would bet a year's worth of Cat Chow that the cat has been abused. I had a shelter cat who was like that. She was a year old when I got her, and was nearly dead from abuse and starvation. She never got over it, though we treated her as gently as we knew how. But we understood why she acted the way she did, and we gave her the absolute best life we could give her. She lived eight years and was as happy as we could make her.

That sounds like overstimulation, the cat doesn't know what to do so it does something then runs.

All cats CAN bite, but not all will. I had one we called shark mouth for a good reason, but he was pretty unusual. Most of the others woulnd't even consider biting, but might take a poke at us with a paw if they got upset.

You have to be patient with cats. They often just don't know what to do when around people. Especially if they're less than a year and a half old.

Yes. All cats bite. Its in their nature - they're carnivores. But cats are trainable, and if you make it clear to the cat that you do not appreciate being bitten, then it will stop. Always give your cat something to bite though, because that's how they play. An old sock will do, or a toy that you pick up at the local pet store. Often the cat will find a toy that it prefers, so don't worry about it. but keep in mind that the cat may be trying to play with you. Ask your friend if this behavior is normal, and what she does about it in either case.

No they're not. I had the sweetest tabby growing up. Now mind you in his early years he would sometimes scratch without provocation but it was usually a sign he wanted to play. As long as it wasn't feral or semi feral at any point in it's life and very well sociallized a new cat is great! I really miss having cats since I joined the military and it's going to be one of the first things i do when I get out.

Well, it could be because she has had enough, or because you were petting her where she doesnt like to be pet. (Some cats might not like their ears, stomach, lower back by their tails...)
Be sure to watch for body language, if shes flattening her ears, tail is swishing fast..
It could even be that she thinks its a game.
If your friend allowed her to bit her hands when she was a kitten when playing, the cat might think its a game.

Not all cats do this. Mine bites when your rub her tummy (altough shes never really drawn blood except maybe once or twice, and it was just a drop). My other one has never bitten..

No, not all cats behave that way. I suspect there is some part that the cat dislike to be petted thats why it reacted in that way.
