The water is clear, and they are testing the depth so that they don't accidentally put their faces into the water. My cats do this sometimes too. If you get several smooth river stones and put them in the bottom of their water dish, that will help them determine where the water level is. It's a cat thing.

Yes, all our cats have done that over the years. Some do it more than others. Some dip a paw and then lick the water off of it. Some just stir up the water than drink. Some just watch the moving water. And, some consistently spill the water which I then step in when I'm in my stocking feet.

Some cats do this from time to time; I think it's just because they like to watch the ripple patterns on the surface.
I did have a cat though for many years, who only ever drank with his paw. He developed this great technique where he would scoop milk from a bowl, a jug, or even a glass right into his mouth. Until he was very old (he lived 19 years!)he never drank any other way.

We do with our cat.

She will even put her paw in her food dish before chowing down on it (dried food only, thankfully). I've often wondered if it is some kind of act of territorialism, a sort of, "paws off - this is mine".

Others have mentioned that it's funny until their cat shakes the water off the paw. We have that same exact problem!

Cats have poor vision directly in front of their faces and sometimes "test" the water height with a paw before drinking.

Yes, my younger cat does this all the time. He loves to play in his water dish.

I also see him dip his paw in the water and lick the water off his paw instead of drinking straight from the bowl.

I just thought he was strange.. with all these responses, I guess he's not as strange as I thought!!

Maine coons just LOVE water. This is very common behavior for them. A lot of times they'll do this then dip their paw in the water & drink it. My **** cat sits in the sink for hours and watches the water drip! They're very entertaining kitties!

My kitty used to do that if we had a small amount of water left in a glass. She would put her paw in and bring it up to her mouth. Yum, Yum!

If there's a way they will find it. Maybe the water tasted better that way. Only kitty with really know for sure.

One of ours does. Then he licks the water off his paws. We think he didn't learn how to drink properly as a kitten.

He's 8 or so, and just fine.

My younger kitten does. She is 4 months old. She has put her paw in the water dish while drinking from the day we brought her home.

Now I think my older kitten (7months old) has picked up this habit from her! We had him for 3 months before we got our little girl and he had never done this before we got her!
