Just wondering. Like say a dog has only eaten dog food their whole lives and say someone is a hunter. What if the hunter catches, say a deer, and he cuts off a chunk of meat and gives it to the dog right there and then. What would happen to the dog if he liked the smell and ate it. I mean it is what his ancestors ate, so why couldn't a dog eat raw, fresh meat? Details...

LOTS of people feed raw food. I have been feeding raw meaty bones and organs to my Danes for 5 years. They never get kibble of any kind.

He would probably thank you for it.

All my dogs are raw meat eaters - I am a raw feeder - they get rabbit, kangaroo, chicken, lamb, deer, etc. etc. every day. On the odd occasion they get commercial dog food, they end up with the worst gas imaginable and generally get the runs.

There are a number of raw diet groups in Yahoo if you want to discuss the subject at length. Also, check out Lew Olsen's B-Naturals website.

A number of dog owners advocate what is called the BARF diet (seriously). That stands for either Bones and Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Try a search on BARF diet for dogs, and you'll surely come up with a bunch of hits.

Most "better" dog foods are the same thing humans eat- just processed a little differently. A good dog food will cost about $1.15 per pound. I have tried it before, for a lot of dogs. believe me- its far more convenient to buy dog food. If you have just a couple of dogs and they don't eat too much- you can just prepare enough while you are fixing the family meal. It works okay. Yes, you do need to leave out the spices. A little salt is okay. Onions, garlic, and peppers are not good. Don't give your dog bones of any kind. You can google "home made dog food".

the dog would be his buddy forever lol. dogs can have raw meat, its what their ancestors lived on after all, i just wouldn't change their diet over to all meat all at once or give them large quantities all of a sudden, as it may not agree with them immediately.

Some deer carry disease so I wouldn't feed raw deer meat.. But raw meat otherwise isn't going to hurt a dog.. It won't make them mean and blood thirsty either.

Some say a raw-meat diet is best for dogs. Most people feed dog food because it's cheaper and more convenient.

Most likely the only ill effect would be a bad case of diarrhea. Some hunters say that you should never give a rabit or bird dog venison (deer) because it makes them prefer to hunt deer over their intended game, but I would leave the question of that to the field trialers on here.

Its called raw feeding or B.A.R.F. and many feed their dogs this way. others cook for their dogs. i do alittle of both and just a bit of kibble from a local company that only uses local crops and meat.

My dog only ate dog food- except for the times he caught rabbits while we were at the park. I let him have them, and he ate them up. He was always fine, of course. That's really what they should be eating anyways, but who can afford it?
