I think many of those who wrote hymns we hold dear were divinely inspired. My most favorite hymn is:

TAKE MY HAND PRECIOUS LORD

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on,
Let me stand
I'm tired, I am weak I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When my way grows drear precious Lord linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry,
Hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet,
Hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on,
Let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Yes, I think some were heavenly inspired and then there are those that are written because it comes from someones heart and compassion. I know that I look to see where alto of the hymns were written and I see allot more from Scotland and Ireland than I do from the States or somewhere else.
I have quite a few favorites and I don't know the names right now. I like the happy and upbeat ones the best. Just keep me away from Amazing Grace as I always cry with this one. You add Bag pipes to that song and I am a crying basket case. Is you'll never walk alone a hymn? I like that one, but I have one that is from the U.K. that is my most favorite and I cannot think of it! I think I am just tired as it is almost Midnight here in Michigan and I am seeing double so I am going to go to bed now. Suzie, When I find that one hymn I will let you know.

Some were inspired of God - some simply cried out within their life own circumstances to God, the way poets vent their feelings.

Some were just that... poetry, later put to music. Some were written as music from the start.

A wonderful site for the history of our favorite old Hymns - as for the music and lyrics themselves, is:

I wish I could pick just ONE favorite hymn! I love Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art and The Lord's Prayer.

Peace.

Let's see .... Favorite hymns ...
A heart in Winter
The Earth is our Mother
Sisters Now our Meeting is Over
Circle 'Round the Fire

I don't think the writers of these songs believed in Heaven.

The point is that a hymn is not necessarily a Christian song. There are hymns in many religions, and even some non-religious hymns.

Possibly. Some hymns are beautiful. Then again, I think some are down right awful... Maybe some are inspired - but not all!
My favorite hymns are the ones we sing during Lent. I especially love "O Sacred Head Surrounded" and "O Come and Mourn With Me". They help me to meditate on the Passion of Christ.
You can find the lyrics to them both on this website http://midihymns.homestead.com/Lent.html

It Is Well With My Soul written by Horatio G. Spafford. He was inspired to write this hymn when his four daughters drown. He was working and his wife and daughters were traveling to meet him when it happened. I love this song because it talks about knowing that all is well between you and God. I know where I am and I know where I am going when I die. To Heaven where hope all of you are going.

I believe that the people that wrote those precious hymns was weathering storms in their lifes, like. What a friend we have inJesus oh what needless pain we bare all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Like me they new prayer changes things and we do carry alot of guilt and pain when we really dont have to.
I am glad i can call him my friend

Yes, especially those that have endured the test of time. In old one my favs are Amazing Grace, Silent Night and Rock of Ages.

In the modern it's I Can Only Imagine and You Raise Me Up. I especially love that last one because my father showed me more of God's unconditional love and belief in me than anyone else. Whenever I hear it I think of him and wish he had been alive to sing it to.

I also love May My Love Give You Roots. My son had so many learning and other disabilities. He spent most of his life being teased and made fun of. But for all the pain he never once tried to be anyone but himself and cared for others w/o seeing any differences. So when he graduated I gave him a copy of that song. My baby boy has turned into quite a man. We still have our disagreements but I'm so proud of who he has become.
