I am now in the navy and am signed up for the nuclear field. I am very happy with my decision, but I do not leave for basic until February 6. I asked my recruiter for an earlier ship date, but he said it is very hard to do. Does anyone know why this is? Most people that sign up are sent out right away. I was just curious as to why this is?

When you enlisted, your active duty entry date was set. From that date, your position in nuclear field "A" school was locked in. So if you were to go to boot camp early, you would have to wait to go to "A" school. The Navy does not want you sitting around with nothing to do, so you will have to wait until February.

maybe in your lifetime you will see a nuclear renaissance, as of now there is no new construction of nuclear power plants,
so when you get out job opportunities maybe limited...

don't get me wrong, it is a good field to go into, and ask your recruiter if navy nukes are the first ones on the boat and the last ones off the boat.....so instead..have you considered electronics technician jobs?

You really choose a good field. there are plenty civilian jobs desiring your skill set once you get out of the navy. The Navy Nuclear schools are intense so be prepared to stress! You will receive sizable bonuses and advance quicker than you counterparts.

It has to do with when the classes you need are available. I suspect that the nuclear field is relatively desireable (not sure why, we aren't building new civilian nuclear reactors so I'm not sure it's marketable after service) and relatively small.

It's because of the limited amount of seats in your school.
You accession date is tied to your class conviening date.

If there is an earlier opening, trust me your recruiter will let you know.

Because your tech school has limited seats. It makes no sense to ship you through basic, if there is no seats available in the class room.
