We must lean on holy spirit or risk being misled by our own treacherous hearts (Jeremiah 17:9)
Prayer, of course, is essential, but more is needed. We must prepare our hearts. (Job 11:13) This humbling ourselves, being ready and willing to to be honest with ourselves. It means being hungry for the word of God.(Matthew 5:3, 1Peter 2:2)
Now that one has the proper heart attitude and has prayed for holy spirit, one should recognize the help that God provides and accept it. The Ethiopian Eunuch mentioned in Acts 8:27-39 showed that he had the qualities of humility, honesty, and a hunger for the truth. God's spirit directed Philip to go where he would surely meet this man. When Philip heard him reading aloud from the book of Isaiah, he asked him if he knew what he was reading. The man was humble enough to admit that he needed guidance. This led Philip to give him a thorough witness, beginning with this scripture. This in turn led to the man's being baptized.
We today also receive such spirit directed help through the faithful and discreet slave (Matthew 24:45).

I personally read the bible every day. I listen to teachers and reason from scripture that I have read to see if they are mistaken or not. I stay away from speculation or "adding your own details". When someone starts doing that, I don't listen to it much.

I think testing everything that is said is one of the best ways to not fall into a false religion. Never trust reputation. Always measure what is said based on the bible.

Here is an example. A TV preacher may say "send us money to sew the seed and get your blessing". What I would do is find out what scripture they are quoting and then read the verse. Then I read the context of the verse (what the passage is talking about). Then I see if what they are applying to the scripture is something that they added to the text or is it really what the original author meant.

If you take the sewing of seed and look in scripture, the seed is usually referring to preaching the word of God to others. Jesus illustrates this in his parable of the seeds, and explains it later. The text for this is in Matthew 13 by the way.

I spent a very long time searching for the Truth, and in doing so learned a lot about false teachers, false cults, bad teaching, and so on, but thankfully to God the Holy Spirit he now guards me from error.

I do not lean on my own understanding neither on my own interpretation. All of us needs Jehovahs Guidance for understanding especially when we need to understand the scriptures, we have to ask Gods holy spirit for us to come up with the proper understanding. Even Jesus Christ doesn't lean on his own understanding. In the account of Jesus’ baptism, while God is described as being in “the heavens,” the holy spirit appears “descending like a dove” upon Jesus. (Matthew 3:16, 17) Additionally, Jesus spoke of the holy spirit as a “helper.”—John 14:16. We know for a fact that Jesus is the son of God, he is sinless and perfect and yet he ask for the holy spirit as a helper unlike us we're imperfect we mostly need the holy spirit in everyday life.

Jehovah's spirit has to be there for understanding to come into play. I hear from people all the time that they have read the Bible cover to cover. But did they understand what they read? NO. People are lost if they lean on their own understanding. Jehovah has to be the biggest part of it.

Pro 4:1 ¶ Hear, ye children, the instruction of a Father (Yahweh), and attend to know understanding.

Pro 4:2 For I give you sound doctrine, so do not forsake my law.

The Bible says: “Do not lean upon your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) Why not? Because all humans have inherited a fundamental flaw that can warp their judgment. When Adam and Eve rebelled against God, they adopted the standards of the selfish traitor Satan and chose him as their spiritual father. They then passed on to their offspring a family trait—a treacherous heart with the ability to recognize what is right but with the tendency to pursue what is wrong.

Jehovah is the source of wisdom. Man's wisdom will only get you into trouble. If our thinking fails to harmonize with Jehovah’s, we do well to accept his wisdom for what it is—infinitely superior to ours. (Isaiah 55:8, 9) To trust in Jehovah means to let his thinking guide our own.

Well some people depend on others to interpret for them. Let me say to you not to depend on anyone else to interpret for you. Spend time in prayer ask the Lord to show the meaning of the verses that you read to you. He never fails me. I used to let others until the Lord reminded me if I do not read the word for myself how do I know what it says for sure? So I began to read the bible and I couldn't understand alot of it at first. But the more I sought after the Lord and prayer for a discerning spirit and for Him to show me what the verses meant He began to reveal truths to me trough His word. And still today If I can't understand it I go to Him in prayer and then maybe you can get a spiritual leader to help you some but always seek God first. That is just how I do it I am sure you will get alot of good advice on here I do.....

Proverbs 3:5 tells us to "trust in Jehovah with all your heart"....and that's just what I do. Our thoughts and ways are not like Jehovah's, which can cause us to do wrong things and justify them as right. So if we really want to please God and learn truly who He is and what He wants, we will rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our footsteps on the right path.
Peace
