I am of the mind that if you can make it you should. I have researched and all that, but I was wondering if any of my other fellow heathens have made thiers. Tips and tricks fully welcome. And wish me luck.

Nikki you would be surprised at how it's related to religion. At least to mine. *sigh* it's ok. Stupid people can't help themselves now can they?

Doubly ditto Thrudheim on Moscow Hide and Fur (Moscow, *Idaho* not Moscow, Russia). Great product, great prices, great people. Shop online at www.hideandfur.com, then call the toll-free on the website to buy.

Polished horn in sumbel-worthy size, single, will run you about $20. All you need to do from there is cure it . . . after a good bottle brushing, stand it up (I wrap the end in a towel and stick them in the garbage disposal) and fill it with a good strong dark beer---Shiner Bock or Guinness work great. Let it sit like that for about 24 hours and you're done. :-)

Some people use salad bowl finish or beeswax. Neither is necessary, and both are more trouble than they're worth.

I bought one, but then I hollowed it out on the end and put a plug in it, so now it can be either a drinking or a playing horn.
Also, I carved it out with ornaments myself.
I would suggest you against making your own because:
a) it's hard to get a good horn of a slain animal, which is without cracks... etc
b) cooking, softening and hollowing out of it takes AGES, demands the right tools, makes a whole lot of mess and stinks to high heaven and back
c) if you get the horn from an untrustworthy source, you risk getting an illness from the bone tissue (even as bad as BSE).

If you decide to make one yourself despite this, you're welcome to mail me, I'll help you with all the advice I can.

Drinking horns are clean hollow cattle or sheep horns with some sort of lining and stand. You could buy an unfinished horn and then make it your own with decoration.

Here is a link to Tandy Leather that sells horns (unfinished) by mail.

type in horns at the search bar on the site.

I hope that helps.

I made one a long time ago.

Clean and disinfect the inside.

Lightly rough up the ouside and apply a light coat of verathane (sp). Let dry in a place without dust. Repeat this 3 more times.

A friend of mine across the pond. We drank a lot of mead out of the horn and made rude comments about the horn.

I have not made one but I know the basic techniques. If you take the original horn you would use a hot coal or hot poker (or both) to hollow the horn out...
