I'm leaving for Navy boot camp and a few weeks and was told by recruiters and other people currently in the navy that I would have the opportunity to change my rating right before boot camp. Does anyone know if they allow you to change at boot camp or if this doesn't happen anymore.

You need to talk with the recruiter and try to get your "A" school in writing before you leave although I suspect it may be too late.

You can apply for any "A" school you want. You are not stuck with your rate. Right now you are an E1 a recruit. You will be given a lot of tests in Boot to determine what you are best suited for. If you don't' get the rating you want; once you're out in the Fleet you can "strike" for the rating you want, This is what I did because I did not get an "A" school out of Boot Camp.

OK, you won't get a better answer than this so read carefully.

You may have an opportunity to change your rate, you may not. Generally you will have an opporunity to do so, but it will depend on what your are currently obligated for, and what is in demand, and how you did on ASVAB and related exams if you took any other pre-qual exams such as the NUC qual etc.

An example would be you just decided to sign up, you dont have any guarenteed rate. If you had opted to take the NUC qual and passed, they will come looking for you. Another example would be you heard about Submarines and want to go that route. Provided you scored well enough, you would likely get the chance if you wanted to do so.

Another example: you signed up to go NUC and volunteered Sub Duty. Doubtful you get out of that. You could get out of Subs, but not likely they are going to just let you switch out for another rate.

Finally, it will also depend on whether you have been sworn in yet. If you have, your options are more limited. If you have not, you are in the drivers seat.

In any event if you are realizing you may want to do something different now, speak to your recruiter. It would be best if you are wanting to go into a more critical rating. Almost 100% chance to change if you do that.

Just read more BS to clear up for you: if you have been sworn in, you are in. You don't swear in, or sign, "officially" at boot camp unless you haven't yet been sworn. Ya wanna test it if you've been sworn in? Smoke a joint and fail a piss test. You'll find out.

Probably not. Don't believe all the crap they throw at you. I went in myself a few years back and was told they wouldn't cut my hair. Yeah, I was pretty ticked off to say the least. I was also told by my recruiters a lot more other crap, but they're just being "yes" people to get you out there.

Look, I'm not telling you not to go, in fact you ought to! But make sure you get EXACTLY what you want. Otherwise you're just flushing about 4 years down the crapper. Oh and by the way, they don't have your behind until you sign at bootcamp. Yep, you can leave while you're there; within the first 36 hours that is. You'll sign a few days after you get there and OFFICALLY sign your contract. Some recruiters try and say that you have to go once you're sworn in at MEPS, but that's a lie.

Check this sight out, I just found it.....

Like i said, you should go. Just make sure you pick the EXACT rate you want. Remember this quote, "Choose your rate, choose your fate..." Trust me, get the one you want.

God bless! And no worries about bootcamp. The worst part is waking up early ;)

Yes you will, if there is an opening in the field you want.
They should, on 1 day in boot camp assemble everyone to hear speeches from all of the ratings. I dropped my "A" school. Of course the new school may be longer. I had to extend my duty to have the school I wanted.
Good luck and Thank You for serving.

first of all what is your rate? If you are undesignated then they are going to put you where they feel and allow you to take a test to strike for a rate. If you have been guaranteed a rate before boot camp then you are basically stuck.

If you haven't reported to boot camp yet, find your recruiter and ask. If you are currently in boot camp, ask your CC If you are already assigned to "A" school, ask your chief. It is possible but I don't know if they will allow it. A lot will depend on how much the Navy needs MAs or DCs

At some point in basic training you will visit the classification office where they will review your school guarentee. If there is another job that is more critical then the one you picked and you want it you will have a chance to change.

Forget about the promises the recruiter made to you, they are worthless. The Navy will put you where they need you.
