The lights that have come out in recent years are great the LEDs especially. They have a very long life and also burn much cooler. Also they are brighter than the standard christmas bulbs. I put them on my house last year and I will never go back. Also if you want the lights on the house to be perfectly straight the only way to get it dead on is to use the plastic clips at each bulb. Otherwise the strands will sag. Good luck.

I like the classic white lights. The colored lights make your house look cheap, in my opinion.

If you want them to be straight, you will need a ladder and some help. You could use one of them laser guides to make sure they are straight.

Icicles lights! All brands are fairly similar. But, since you do get what you paid for, don't buy the cheapest ones available.
