My company lost a contract that I was working on. They want us to stay on for the transistion to the next contractor. They said they want us to keep working on task and they will find us more work. Should I trust them and focus on task at hand or start looking for a backup plan?

This is mostly just a vague hope of the company.

They are hoping that they can get more contracts. The problem for them is that they need staff around to start working on the new contract right away.

However this could take weeks or months. If the time frame is weeks then it is cheaper to keep the current staff around, if it is months, then it is cheaper to lay people off then recruit later.

Here are the options, which can all be explored simultaneously.

1. Look for new jobs. Maybe you will be offered a better job than the current one.

2. Reskill. Do self-pace or formal courses, it doesn't matter. Learn something that will enhance your employability. You can use company time to do it.

3. Help the company get contracts. Help write proposals.

Be valuable and they will want to keep you around in the transitition people.

But be looking for other opportunities.

When bad things appear to happen, then you have to make the most of things. If you make the effort, maybe you be one of the people who stay on and when the next contract comes along be supervising, training and managing the new guys.

Good luck

Basically I think it is a bit late to look for work when you start needing it. I believe that, only for the sake of knowing your market value, you should occasionally be on the lookout for new opportunities. It doesn,t mean you leave your actual job, but looking around keeps you options open. Don't go too far, you don't want to have to say "no" to a good opportunity when you are not really ready to move. But keeping an eye out can provide great good :

- You know how much you are worth. In IT, it is very useful since the market grows so fast, your salary can increase much faster by moving from time to time instead of staying in place. Plus, as in finance, diversifying your experience is great for you.
- Seeking employment is much more stressful than looking around for a job. So help yourself get rid of part of the stress and keep an eye out, the day you feel it is time to move on, raise you hand and grab the opportunity !
- "Always leave on a high note!" The basic principal is that you should always leave a good impression when leaving a company. Either they miss you alot or the think you grabbed an opprtunity that you couldnt let go. That way, one day, if your paths crosses again, you might be thankful!

Of course, you may have to leave for all the other reasons... but sometimes, we leave because it is our choice!

Keep your options open and keep an eye on the job market so you know what you can do if the need arises, but don't make any commitments before you know you'll need it.

Start looking for a job now, while you still have one! You need to take that first step!

Start looking on you own immediately. Don't count on them finding a job for you.
