I know that the Younger Futhark is a writing system but the old Norse Germanic peoples believed the Runes held magical powers, i was wondering how do you use the Runes???

Thanks!

The Younger, Elder, Anglo-Saxon and Frisian runes are all related writing systems . . . there is no solid evidence of their use in divination prior to about the 18th C, as far as I've read, although a passage in Tacitus' "Germania" from the *1st* C is certainly intriguing and frequently taken to be a reference to runic divination.

Generally, runes are used in spells, charms, talismans, and amulets . . . either "risted" (cut/engraved) or as "galdor" (part of a chanted or sung charm). And no, I won't tell you more than that, but *will* recommend you order Stephen Pollington's "Rudiments of Runelore." One must take up, and EARN, the runes for one's self; however, Pollington's slim but BS-free volume will at least get you off to a well-foundationed start.

I understand the original reason behind the runes so I do not use them out of respect for the Gods of the Norse. I will use other divinatory/mantic practices instead including the ostraka (a similar system based on the Hellenic religion) and divination by using dice as well as the more modern system of Tarot.

As for using the Futhark for spellwork, there are different methods in Hellenic tradition that I could use if I wanted to so again, I would not use the Runes out of respect for the original users and their Gods....

Wow, that is a tough question! The ability to use runes for magical or divinatory purposes requires lots of diligent study and practice.

The good news: All of the information is out there! There are several reliable books on the subject that will get you started in the right direction. "The Rune Primer" by Sweyn Plowright is a good place to begin.

The bad news: There is alot of "not so accurate" information out there concerning runes. The books by Ralph Blum come to mind.

Good luck on your journey!

edit: Yes Daughter, there is a valid school of thought that says runes were never used for divination at all. I respectfully disagree with that opinion, however, as the evidence has led me to another conclusion. Of course, I don't expect everyone to agree with me and I have the utmost respect for your opinion :)

edit2: Ah yes, Pollington! I haven't read that one yet but I've heard nothing but good about it! It is available from amazon for a mere $9.95

Actually runes were not originally meant for divination. Let me see what I can dig up. I don't use them so I don't remember where I read my stuff.
I THINK they were considered "magical" but not divination. They were a gift from the gods. Ugh three days with no sleep and I can't think straight.

edit: Ok I really don't remember where I read it. LOL But I did read it somewhere. I'll star it and see if my much more educated Brethren can tell you one way or the other.

Ahh see! Boar to the rescue. He was who I was hoping would answer for you.

They are a Swedish or Nordic divining tool. I suppose you could look them up with a search engine if you wanted to learn how to use them.
