That's just how we refer to the various highways. I'm not sure why. It sounds perfectly fine to me. I thought it was weird that my friends from Northern California called them just 101 or 5, without using "the" at all. It is just the regional way of commonly naming the highways I suppose. Why, how do you refer to the highways where you are from?

We say "The" because that freeway is notorious. The 5 is old, slow and has only 3 lanes in some places. They even took out a diamond lane. The 405 is famous for going nowhere. Jammed up at the 5 in El Toro...slow through the South Bay Curve...usually depends on the traffic reporters...

Just do. Saying I-5 sounds dumb to us. BTW, it's easy to tell who the LA refugees in Seattle are by the way they refer to the freeways. At least the 5 and the 405.

It's because some are highways, some are freeways, some are interstate highways, some are toll roads, some are bridges and some are intrastate highways. They are not all I-xxx.
I really don't think we're dumb, we just have better things to spend our learning/growth on.

Because the word "the" is necessary to make any sense. i.e. I will show you 5. Here is 5 on the map. Sounds more logical to say: I will show you the 5. Here is the 5 on the map. Get Its?

We have a more personal relationship with our freeways because we spend lots of time on them. I-5 is too formal...when you always hang out on..ya know, the 5...

I don't understand your point.
You're saying that the sentence should be - "I was driving on 5" or "I was taking 5"?
Sorry to disagree but it makes no sense that way.
"I was driving on the 5" or "I was taking the 5" makes much more sense.

probably b/c they are refering to the interstate as being an actual place/location. i live in ohio and we only use "the" in the front of the highway if we are on "the turnpike."
