About 7 years ago our family labrador died and we all missed and miss her like crazy. She was a beautiful black lab. My parents say they wont get another dog until they retire but we've had an awful year (a few deaths in the family) and I think another puppy might be good for us. They've stressed they dont want one but I know if I bought one they couldnt say no due to it being too cute.

Should I get one do you think and just deal with the initial arguments?

I think you should listen to your parents. It's never a good idea to surprise people with a puppy...

If they don't want the commitment of having a pet why not talk to them about being a puppy raiser for an assistance dog organisation in your area?

This way you get to have a puppy in the house, you can all enjoy a year or so with a new puppy, and you can all feel good about the fact that you are raising a dog that will go to someone in real need of that dog.

My family fosters puppies for the local SPCA, so maybe fostering for the SPCA or the Humane Society could be an option for your family. We are starting to move towards working with assistance dogs as it is very rewarding all round, and we get to work with a great bunch of dogs. Most assistance dogs are labs or golden retrievers so it may bring back some pleasant memories.

Don't go behind their backs and get a puppy though - it would be unfair if they really stuck to their guns and the puppy had to be rehomed - it is confusing for everyone, but particularly for the puppy.

Good luck.

No, you shouldn't get them a dog. Yes, puppies are cute, but they take a lot of work. Your parents don't want a puppy right now, so you need to respect their wishes since they would be the ones having to take the puppy out in the middle of the night to go potty. They'd be making and paying for vet appointments and going to obedience classes. Puppies should not be gifts, especially not surprise gifts.

I can understand why you want a dog. Dogs can be great therapeutically during tough times. But, your family should all want a dog. If you go out and get one without telling your parents, they may fall in love with the cuteness...but if they aren't ready for the responsibility, they could later resent the dog.

i know what your saying, and a dog would lighten spirits, but its not gonna solve anything.. it will just make other things worse..if your parents can't handle it with work then that is not fair to the dog..or to them to all of the sudden feel obligated to take care of an animal..i wouldn't do it..if you want a dog fine, if you have the time to take care of it, then they can visit with your dog and still have the same benifits without having to worry about it 24/7..but once they retire that would be a wonderful present to get them

I don't think you need to add any further stress in their lives. Obviously there is a reason why they don't want one.....yet. Maybe they don't want the responsiblity, or they don't have the time to train a new puppy. Remember, they are the ones that have to take care of it after you drop it off -- wait until they are ready.
