I can't help thinking the fact that the US is the one country on earth - to my knowledge - that specifically separated Church and State, must have something to do with it.
In many European countries, there's a bit of religion sprinkled in with the lessons, and then it's off to class to learn about reality. People usually grow bored with it and drop it as soon as they can.
But I'd hate to see the US reverse this extremely sensible law.

The trends are the same in both places - down for faith in God.
Europe has more experience with the corruption of religious figures meddling in politics.
