i'm applying to college right now. (i live with my uncle) and he is telling me that i cannot go to college, he won't let me. I wanna get out there and be independent. Do i have a right to be upset?

Oh and one more question. Could i get a full scholorship based on hardship? My dad died when i was a baby, mom got in a car accident currently in rehab for a head injury, lived wtih grandma she passed when i was in 8th grade and now i live withmy uncle. We kinda have low income.. i have a 3.2 GPA and 22 ACT. Is there anyway i could get a FULL ride to college based on this?

Go and talk to your school counselor. Once you are 18 - your Uncle will have no say about what you do. If you can't get a scholarship (which you may be able to do - talk to the counselor) - you can go to Jr. college. (not that expensive) You may have to work full time and go to school full time - which will be hard - but you CAN do it. I did. I put myself through college.

Also - if your Dad died when you were a baby - you should be getting social security payments. Once you are 18 - if you stay in school ful time - those payments should be coming to YOU (not your Mom or Uncle). That money will help to supplement your college costs too.

I don't know why your Uncle is telling you that you cannot go to college. But again - once you turn 18, you can do whatever you want - providing you are not living under his roof. I do agree with the old saying "If you're under my roof - you'll live my my rules" - so maybe it's best for you to leave.

Again - talk to your school counselor. Think it through. I'll bet you do the right thing! Good luck!

EDIT: Just read your addition. It's expensive to live in dorms - or near a campus - but it's not IMPOSSIBLE. Nothing is. Talk to the counselor - look into your social security payments - secure a job in the town where you will be going to school - get a loan - get a scholarship - do whatever you need to do. You will get what you want if you set your mind on it and work for it!!!

You definitely have a reason to be upset! Your uncle has no right to tell you that you can't go to college. He should be teaching you not to make bad decisions like drugs and alcohol use. But you are making a good decision by wanting to go to college and getting great grades. Don't let anyone stop you from getting an education.

Now your second question, I think your only option is to apply for financial aid. If you are low income financial aid will cover school and even your books.
I am not sure about a scholarship for hardship but check out the link below. it has info on financial aid and scholarships.
Good luck!

You should be upset, yes. Your uncle has no right to say that you can't go to college.
I fully believe that your uncle might be lonely. Did he live alone?
Or maybe he is trying to have some sort of power. Adults are like that.
Or maybe he is just saying that because HE didn't go to college. Anything is possible.

If you worked your hardest, it might be possible that a college might want you: They look at your grades, sure, but they also look for participation, citizenship, and effort. Even if you don't have a 4.0 GPA, it's likely that they'll pick you if your participation, citizenship, and effort are not bad. Colleges have picked people that have C's and B's, but have good participation, citizenship, and effort, but not pick ones that have straight A's but poor participation, citizenship, and effort.

Pray hard, hope you'll make it in the end, and remember that everyone goes through something.

AS for your uncle...
See what's bothering him.
And no, sorry, I don't think they really have anything to do with hardships...

I hope this helps a bit.

**** your uncle. He cannot run your life for you. If I were you I'd look very throughly through college financial aid offices and even make some calls to see if you can get that scholarship.
Meanwhile, go to fastweb.com to make a profile and they'll let you know which scholarships you are eligible for. I'm sorry that your life has been so tough. Let that empower you and get out of your uncle's house. I hope your Mom gets better. You have an excellent GPA. And colleges do look at many factors including grades, hardship, financial need, talents, and extracurricular activity. Good luck with your search!

I don't know why your uncle doesn't want you to go away to college. But I think it is important to remember that wanting you near is a good thing. Maybe you can talk to him and come up with a compromise. Instead of going WAY off to College Maybe you could find one that is only a few hours away and remind him it's ONLY a couple of hours there and back. In the end you will have the final say, but I think you should keep working for a compromise.

Sorry to hear about all the hardships. Just have faith in the lord. I am pretty sure that you can find a full scholarship. Go to your local library and ask the librarian for help. You will also be eligible for a scholarship based on your grades as long as you keep them up. There are also scholarships based on your nationality for instance, there are plenty of scholarships for African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanic Americans.

I would be pissed! He has no right to tell you, you can not go! He's being selfish and should grow up.

Have you applied for any grants or scholarships? If not, get on that ASAP!! The more you get the better off you'll be!

Also, if you are wanting your college paid for you may want to look into joining the Army. They pay for your education, but that may not be your thing!

If your uncle is dumb enough to not let you do what you want with your life to better yourself then I hope you can get out of his house! He doesn't seem to be a good influence.

I wish you nothing but the best!! Good luck!

Why would I get a thumbs down for this? Geeze.

You cannot get a full ride to college but you can get enough aid to pay all your tutions. If you work part time (lot of my friends do) then you should easily be able to support yourself and put yourself through college.

You cannot expect to get a free ride through college, just because you are poor. To get a presidents scholarship (real free ride) you need to have a 3.8 or better GPA and pass the SAT with amazing scores.

You should be upset. He really isn't your dad. This is your life and if you want to go to college then you should be able to go.. He should want you to get a good education and be independent.

I'm not sure if you can get a scholorship just based on hardship.. you might. Check out your high schools career center if they have one.

if you are 18 then technically your guardian has no control over what you do legally he will be angry at first, yes but he'll get over it it sounds like your all hes got and the other way around don't worry too much about it just get a decent job and rent an apartment close to Ur college as for scholarships there is millions out there idk about hardship but it sounds like Ur a pretty good student and research your other interests such as sports or music if that doesn't work out there's always financial aide hope that helps good luck!
