there are many words that have similar roots, and you can shift from one to the other, but there are major differences in pronounciation.

I speak Spanish and Italian, and my sister speaks French, and while these are all romantic languages (meaning they are derived from Latin) they are pronounced quite differently. Spanish and Italian are are very, very similar - as are Spanish and Portuguese - but French to me is unintelligible. If I were to read French I could understand the gist of it, but I could never speak it!

Yes. In some ways they do sound the same. I kid those folks telling them that Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French aren't really different languages but dialects of the same language.
Their verb tense structure is almost identical too.
Just look at how they say "How are you?" Its almost the same.

I speak French, Spanish and English. The languages you mention all come from Latin. If you can read one, you can read all of them, or at least I can. Pronunciation is different, but most people who speak one of the languages can pretty much understand the others, even though they may not be able to speak them.

They are Latin root languages, as is Portuguese, and have many similar sounding words. This does not mean that if a person is fluent in one, that he can necessarily speak the others.

Yes they do sound similar since they have the same roots.
To the ones you have mentioned you could also ad Romanian and Portuguese, all of them belong to a group of languages called the romance languages.

DEFINITELY! for example, french: to swim- nager
spanish: to swim- nadar. pool- piscine & piscina. i guess it's not so much as they sound the same, but that they share the same roots for a ton of words.
spanish and italian sound pretty similar to me (but i only speak, french and spanish)

French, Spanish and Italian all have their grammatical structure and much of their vocabulary from Latin, and so similarities are inevitable.

They are all romance languages descended from Latin, and the modern versions have many cognates. So yes.
