I know that it would have been better to ask him in person, but my boss isn't really a people person-he's kind of shy and quiet, and he's very busy. For this reason I thought it would be easier to write him an email which he could answer in his own time explaining I will be working on my master's while working here full time which will help me with my career with this company and it would be a big favor to me etc. I sent it to him Friday afternoon, and my boyfriend said to wait a week, but it's Tuesday and he'll be in training for the rest of the week.
What should I think of this? I haven't given him a reason to not like me and I've been working my butt off this year finishing a project by myself, when I was budgeted to have another employee. I don't report directly to him, he's my boss' boss, but he knows all about my work. It's too soon to approach him and ask if he received my email, but I think if he was going to do it he would have at least responded by now.

Sorry, I realize a recommendation letter is a favor, but I would expect most people would write one for their employee unless they had a reason not to.

An email is not the way to ask. Go to him directly and say, "Did you get my email asking for a recommendation letter for my grad school program?" If he says no, then ask him directly. If he says yes but says he's been awfully busy, offer to write a draft for him. Give him the date when it is due. Also, assure him that school will not interfere with your work.

It was easier to ask in email ,

And easier for him to forget to do .
You are making tooooo much drama over it not getting done .
Your email request made it low priority , that was your doing .

If you are serious , ask him in person .
