I need to know for Civics class. We have to pretend we're immigrants who went through Ellis Island and now we are writing a letter to someone. The immigrant is steerage class, and one of the answers I must include in a paragraph is to the question, 'What did you bring on board?'

True story, since my great-great-grandparents came from Denmark via Ellis Island when it first opened in 1891. They brought a wooden trunk and nothing else. It contained winter clothing, dishes, silverware, a few ceramic items like a pitcher and a few plates, personal papers, and two blankets.
Mom still has a few of these things, plus the wooden trunk.

Have you ever seen "Titanic"? Steerage class was where all the (relatively) poor people were. So you can see that there would be little room for anything other than a suitcase. I imagine people would take clothes, mostly and a few treasured mementoes.

They would probably bring foods/goods that they thought they couldn't find in America, treasures and clothes.

they brought a suit case with clothes and mementos from their birth land. some ( richer) brought more then that.
