Cause I did and she looked offended. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything I just was truly curious.

In general, that is not a nice thing to say to anyone, in any language. Perhaps that is why she was offended?

People come from across the world to protest at events such as the G20 and NATO Summits, and a good deal of the protesters will be anarchist groups and other drops outs rather than the ordinary French working people. It should also not be forgotten that the French see protest as part of their culture and national psyche dating back to the days of the storming of the Bastille and the French Revolution right through to the modern day. Certain groups such as the French Farmers are more militant than others, and French opposition has prevented problems with regard to the European Common Agricultural Policy from being addressed.

It's not bad to ask that, but maybe you picked an inappropriate moment:

Professeur: Comment dit-on "pencil" en français?
Toi (Waves hand)
Professeur: Oui, Someone Special???
Toi: Oh, I just wanted to know how to say "Shut up."
Classe (Laughs)
Professeur (ennuyé[e] because the lesson has just gone down the toilet)

It's always better to ask questions that might possibly be offensive (and "shut up," while it's not obscene or anything, is rude) before or after class.

BTW, a mild way to tell someone to be quiet is "Tais-toi,"

Lol I struggled with the same kinda thing ALL YEAR last year - I desperately wanted to know what "I am bored" is in French, but I was afraid to ask in case I gave the wrong impression! Good on you for being brave enough to ask! Actually, I still don't know what it is so I'm off to ask.

I don't think it's rude unless you are asking her how to say it because you want to say it to her. If you know how it say it, then you will know when someone is saying it to you, and that has nothing to do with rudeness on your part.

that was one of the most common phrases my french teacher said to us. "te-twa class" (that isn't spelled right but it's been a long time... it is phonetically spelled.
