I am currently stationed in Baghdad and it's not *too* bad. I have been here for 9 months already (only 3 left!!!). My job does not require me to personally interact with locals outside the base, however, many of my "teams" have daily interaction with them. The majority of the populace likes the American presence, not because they like having an "occupying force" but because they appreciate the protection that Coalition Forces allow them. While we are not able to protect everyone, all the time, our presence on the streets, and our offensive operations to push out insurgents have provided the Iraqi people with a considerably safer place to live. With our support, they feel confident enough to stand up against the insurgents and all over the country, tribes are forming allegiances to fight them.

I am extrememly fortunate to be stationed at a large camp so my life is pretty comfortable (besides the 120 degree heat, sandstorms, and that retched smell that you will find everywhere in Iraq). We eat at the chow hall and we have a decent selection of food, shopping is all done at the PX or at the market (where local vendors sell stuff like Persian rugs, bootleg DVDs, artwork, etc) or online. :)

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I would be glad to help you as best I could.

first , how could you think of shopping when there is a war. All americans live in a guarded POST, guarded 24-7. second if you seen videos of it on CNN that is exactly how it looks, less populated in some areas. Is it hard...yes being away from loved ones sux. Some Iraqis are nice they are glad we are there others..well shoot at us or throw rocks, it makes you mad because you dont want to be there. Our food is made by either military cooks or contractors, it is decent sometimes better than the food back in the states bases, not to mention some posts have commodities like subway, burgerking, even baskin robbins. But there are others that have none to the point where you must dig holes and burn your own crap (seriously) so it all depends where you are located.

The place is worse of a hell hole than anything I can think of.

No government services

No trash pickup on Wednesdays.

Limited electricity per day.

No police to speak of.

No security either.

And eating nothing but Top Raumen is starting to get to me. :0)

I'm here now. It's not as bad as the anti-victory crowd will tell you.
