Insurance companies are not in the business of paying for loss prevention.

If you loose your car keys- the insurance will buy you a replacement key - not change all the locks in your car "cause it could get stolen". If a tree falls on your house - we pay for that damage. We do not pay to cut the tree down before it falls "cause it could fall on the house". If insurance paid for preventative maintenance and loss prevention measures - your insurance premiums would be so expensive only Donald Trump could afford it.

As far as flood damage goes - Flood insurance is sold through insurance companies but it is financially backed by the federal government (NFIP- National Flood Insurance Plan).

The standard homeowners policy excludes flood damage. The only way to get coverage for flood is buy purchasing a flood policy - again - its from the federal govt but sold and serviced by private ins co.

"a few small dredges and dredge the tidal rivers" -I'm not sure what area your talking about - but there is no cheap fix to preventing flooding. It is the responsibility of the government. But since you view it as a cheap fix - how about your local govt raise your taxes and use that money to fix the problem. After all - if it's such a simple fix - the tax increase should not be that much......right?

the government or the insurance companies can not stop an act of god.
if your city or town cant do something about the drainage, or preparation for such, which your tax money is paying for, move out of Dodge.
everyone move to a high dry neighborhood, hope the sewers never get stopped up due to this massive amount of over development on top of that hill, and then hope it doesn't rain for 12 days and 12 nights.

or stop letting builders build in high risk areas, or better yet, knock down everything situated under the base flood elevation, and bury with 20-50 ft high with dirt so that water can never rise.

please, be practical.

you cant stop the flooding, you can take preventative measures and hope that helps, and you can give aid to those effected, or those with the possibility of such damages can buy flood insurance from fema.
-wait, that's what they already do.

Excuse me but since when was it up to the insurance industry to solve such problems? If the government won't take care of the problem, what justification is there for the insurance companies to come up with the billions of dollars it would take? That money comes out of the pockets of the insurance companies' customers; people like you and me. Do you want to come up with the cash for that? My premiums are high enough as it is. I also pay tax dollars to the government. If the government can't get it's priorities straight, I'm not about to excuse them by just paying more premiums so my insurance company can take care it. Insurance was never intended to save the world from itself or solve every social problem out there.
