(This might be just me, but...) People should do right things because they are right, not to get on the good side of their deity. It disturbs me to think that some people are moral and just for the sole purpose of getting into heaven.

Well, this person's objective of pleasing God is fine, stating that they will then get into heaven because of it, is either a joke, or a judgement they can't really make. I don't think I would call it brownie points though. This person did have to suffer for it, so it was not without cost to her. On the other hand, it would have been worth more to her spiritually if she didnt' tell anyone.

Doing good things is considered to be 'fruits of the spirit' or 'works'. Many times works are done solely for recognition. 'Look what I did'. 'Is the camera rollin?' Things done for the same reasons most other people do them.
Fruits of the spirit are things done out of good will to mankind. This is simply an outward expression as the result of inward conviction. Yahweh sees our hearts not our actions. That's how His 'merit system' works. All true believers will understand this.

No I don't try to get brownie points. I try to be the real me. Doing good things comes naturally to me. I don't have to try. I hope I am pleasing to God.

The bible says no man is good.
Therefore we cannot get into heaven by doing good works -only by believing in Him.
Praise Christ!

i answered this question :-)
seriously though, I know some people who think like this.
I don't know whether it is right or wrong, but I do believe that God will judge all our actions one day.
And yes, sometimes I do try to do good things, not necessarily to score brownie points, but maybe to wipe out some of the bad I have done in my life. Try to balance out my bad points with some good points.....

Whoever (whether your friend or her mother) it is that believes this, she is confused. Christians are already saved and do good works out of gratitude for what God has already done for them.

She is sadly mistaken.
Good works done for the wrong reason do not get you into heaven. God knows her heart and is aware that her motives are not pure.
