Let's go off the beaten path unseen by most tourists.
Walk across the most beautiful bridge in America, the Brooklyn Bridge. Under the bridge, order a pizza from Grimaldi's. I like roasted red pepper with fresh garlic just like Frank Sinatra did.
Take a ride on the best tourist value in America: the Staten Island Ferry. Where else can you see the Statue of Liberty and the rest of the New York Harbor for about 2 bucks?
Take the # 6 train to 86th St and walk west to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Check out the Egyptian art and the mummies. Get to know Van Gogh in the European artists of the 19th Century. Twist yourself around some Picasso. Go up to the cafe on the roof for a great view of Central Park. Then continue to walk north along 5th Ave to see the Conservatory Gardens and the Harlem Meer, something most tourists have never even heard of.
Later on, walk across Central Park at 72nd St. You'll see magicians, jugglers, puppeteers, and listen to music of every type. Walk a little south and see the Manhattan Zoo for children of all ages. All this and you've spent practically nothing.
Take the subway to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. You may never want to leave, you'll be so tranquil. This is the NYC of the real New Yorker, and I'll let you go to Times Square on your own.

Get to Katz's Deli. It's where the famous scene in When Harry Met Sally was performed and the pistromi is great.
Eat at Carmine's in Mid-town, but be careful. It's easy to order way too much. One dish will feet two easily.
Catch Tony and Tina's Wedding. I did it in NYC and Chicago but NYC was way better. It is interactive theature and as fun as YOU make it.
If you like Jazz and you want to touch history go to the Birdland (Charlie Parker's old club).
If you're there on a Monday night try to get to the Carlyle Hotel and see Woody Allen play his clarinet. $75 a person. Don't eat dinner unless you want to drop $150+ a head (no booze).
You MUST get to Little Italy at lunch ($6.00) for pasta dish. OR Veal Marsala at Angelo's. GREAT!!
Get a subway pass and learn to ride the rails. It's fun and makes you feel like a REAL New Yorker. So you get lost, Big deal, there are hundreds of folks willing to help you find your way. Take a chance. Plus, it's cheaper than cabs or the bus.
I'm from Texas and am not as familiar with THE City as others, but I love that place, and so will you.
If you like leather (not kinky sex) head down to Orchard Street. It's the old garment district and is mostly about leather goods. Haggle and have some fun.

First you need to determine your budget. Once you know how much you can afford to spend, then you map out your must do list. I mean a four-star restaurant like Daniel on Manhattan's East Side will cost you and a guest over $400 with a good bottle of wine.

On my high school class trip I remember we went to radio city music hall. I guess that must have been good because I still remember it after 105 years...lol here's the google image page for radio city
http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4TSHA_en___US212&q=radio+city+music+hall&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
Also we went up the Empire State building which was neat but a little scary to me.
If I went there right now I would go to a Broadway musical
here's what is playing
http://www.nytheatre.com/nytheatre/glist4.htm
I would pick out one that I know and like the music, Chicago, the Phantom, Chorus line or Mary Poppins.....

hey, I just went there for the first time this summer and loved it. The main thing to see is Time's square. it's close to broadway and central park. I also went on a boat ride to see the statue of liberty. Those were my highlights for sure!
