Note that people are basing this assumption on what we know of the knowledge of ancient peoples. Although the Egyptians learned that the earth was not flat fairly early, it is true that most early civilizations were not aware of this. I believe it has been proven that the Egyptians knew of the "rotational" (for lack of a better word) nature of the earth before the birth of Jesus. Nevertheless, it is *likely* (not proven) that the authors of the bible believed that the earth was flat.

Note, however, that the bible *never* claims that the earth is flat! We *still* use the phrase "the four corners of the earth", but of course we do not consider the earth to be flat. (and there is no such implication in this statement, anyway. Lots of not-flat things have 4 corners.) In other words, that is not a statement about our belief of the configuration of the world, but rather a figure of speech. Likewise, you (and most people) do not consider that, geometrically speaking, a circle is completely flat. But because someone says the earth is a circle does not mean that they believe that it is flat.

Thus, in *no verse* in the bible is the claim made that the earth is flat.

A circle is a flat geometrical object. Now, a sphere would indicate that it wouldn't be flat. Regardless, this verse contradicts the many references found in the bible that indicate that the earth has four corners and sits on pillars.

A circle IS flat... a sphere is not (and this terminology was around during this era, so that is not an excuse). This conforms to the standard flat earth believe of ancient to medievil man, imagery of a circular flat earth, suspended in water as was the moon believed to be, thus explaining its orbit.

A circle IS flat. A sphere isn't. There is a difference. Think of a plate... most of them are in the shape of a circle, round, no sharp edges... but that hardly makes it a sphere.
