John 10:33ff. "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken—what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?"

He is pointing out their ignorance of scripture and the God who gave it to them which caused them to be blind to His(Jesus') full divinity.

In the OT God had explained that His chosen people would be gods to others(like Moses was a god to the pharoh:

Ex 7:1
7:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.
KJV)

And as the kings were sometimes "gods"...meaning that they were in a high and exalted postition to others.

Jesus then contrasts this being as a god to some with His truely being sent by the Father in whom the fullness of the godhead dwelt:

John 10:35-36
35 If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came-and the Scripture cannot be broken- 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world?
(from New International Version)

Col 1:18-20
19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
(from New International Version)

Col 2:9

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
(from New International Version)

Greater in the Greek language is "meizon" which means "larger" God the Father is "larger" than Jesus. These statements substantiate the trinity. Let me explain easily how it works. Imagine that you are God. Now look down at your belly button. Now imagine that your belly button is the entire universe+some. So God is HUGE. Now imagine knowing that there is NO way you can represent yourself to your creations because of your size. Jesus is God. That is the first point. Jesus can do everything God can do. Jesus IS the God that created us. Jesus is the only form that we (or any of God's other children) can recognize due to God's size. The two are one... Now the trinity is God with the Father over all, in all, to all, and through all. He is everywhere. Jesus, the Father, and the Holy spirit work together as one person. The Holy Spirit is God EVERYWHERE... You cannot escape God Because everything around us is made by God and COMES from God. Everything you see around you was made from nothing. Everything.

‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, I am God’s Son?” (Joh 10:31-37) Jesus there quoted from Psalm 82, in which human judges, whom God condemned for not executing justice, were called “gods.” (Ps 82:1, 2, 6, 7) Thus, Jesus showed the unreasonableness of charging him with blasphemy for stating that he was, not God, but God’s Son.

At Psalm 82:1, 6, ’elo·him′ is used of men, human judges in Israel. Jesus quoted from this Psalm at John 10:34, 35. They were gods in their capacity as representatives of and spokesmen for Jehovah. Similarly Moses was told that he was to serve as “God” to Aaron and to Pharaoh.

Wow, that was a good one... =o) Don't ya just love Jesus??

It's true. Jesus was the second Adam... (the firstborn of the Spirit) so just as Adam was God's son, Jesus was God's son. Except Jesus was perfect... and begotten in a different way than Adam was.

Jesus is saying that "to whom the word of God came" essentially means that any who hear Gods word are of God - descendants of God. Even moreso is Jesus God because he is set apart from other descendants of God in that he was sent here by God.
Does that make sense? This is kindof a "gnostic" more mystical verse in many ways. We came from God, therefore we are of his essence.

Christ called himself, "the son of man", not the son of God. He rebuked a man for calling him good. He said only his father in heaven was good. He said we are His/Her equal, and that we could do all the things he could. All we need is faith the size of a mustard seed. Too, when he taught us to pray, he said “OUR” Father who art in heaven…. Not the MY father. We are all equal to Jesus in God's eyes. If you believe in Jesus, believe this, because he said so.
Peace

Bill and Dean610 are correct. Jesus was also showing them how hypocritical they were, in not objecting to the words of the Psalm, but applying the rules more strictly to Him.

Jesus gave many examples of how to live and told everybody that they could do what he did if they lived by his example of love, forgiveness, compassion etc. That is what he meant when he said that. Copy me, and you will be as I am, is how I translate it.

Religion always denies what they seek. God has only ONE Son and He is Present in every form. Life is God's gift and the Life in you isn't the story covering It, It is Christ!
