You would think, being that there is all the proof in the world that we are, in fact, alive, that people would take this life for what they could and live like they've always wanted to, but somehow people get so caught up in what will happen to them for an "eternity" that may or may not exists that they waste the only definite thing they've got. peace.

"Live life to the fullest" Kinda depends on a person's definition of that phrase, doesn't it?
There IS an afterlife. And God gives us instructions on what to do about it, so I think....
"Don't hold anything back" "Go for it!" "Do all that you are able to!" and of course... "Live life to the fullest."
Drugs, alcohol, pre-marital or extra-marital sex, spending Sunday on things other than God, all are contradictory to the above statements..... by my understanding of what God would have us do.
BTW - The greatest gift is the gift of eternal salvation. There IS an afterlife, and without it (salvation), eternity in the afterlife would really, really "be bad".
