Pay the account off before you cancel. Send them a letter request the account be closed and request confirmation that the account was closed. Keep the letter and confirmation with your financial papers. Sometimes they come back and bite.

Yes, it's possible, but you still will owe the balance. You would be better off cutting the card up once you've used it, and not cancelling it, as that will decrease your credit score.

It certainly is..of course they will want to know why you are leaving them and probably send a bunch of promotional junk mail to get you to be a client again.
