There is a beautiful church in the Ozarks (near Branson, Missouri) that is made completely of glass. From within it, you can see the forest, the sky, the wonders of nature. Other church's also have many wide-open expanses to the outside. I think of the AirForce Academy chapel in Colorado Springs, for instance.
Some churches have stained glass windows that present pictures (usually biblical scenes.) You can only see through them poorly, but they represent a handiwork of art.
Most church buildings are closed to the outside, so that there can be shelter from the elements (lightning, rain, thunder) just so that it is easier to hear the words of the speaker, or feel the Spirit.
Ancient temples (think Greek, Roman, or Egyptian) often were open to the world around them--not for religious reasons, but because glass was just too expensive.
For me, I prefer a secluded environment, where traffic noises, passing pigeons, kids playing frisbee on the lawn are all removed.
To each, his own. Worshipping God can be done many ways: from your own closet; to high upon a mountainside; to near the bottom of the ocean aboard a US Nuclear Submarine.

In the old medieval cathedrals windows were very important to let in the light. and remind the worshippers of heaven. The stained glass told stories, most people were illiterate. Many of the architectural advances made at that time were allow for bigger and better windows. Today I don't think it makes much difference to most religions.
