also in a geartrain with 4 gears and a 1:5 ratio in each, is it impractical to hope to get 2500rpm out of the last gear if the first is spun by hand?

assume the gears are 10 inches at their max diameter while the smaller gear is one fifth of that at 2 inches. does this still sound impractical?

2500 rpm isn't all that fast. It seems to me that you could get the speed you want out of just two gears at that ratio. That would mean turning the first gear at 100 rpm, which is about how fast you pedal a bicycle - a little over 1 1/2 revolutions per second.
