You will need to allot more than "Are they calm and loving" How old are you?
That is nice that you have allot of acreage. He can run around and be free and stuff. Dogs can be different. I cannot tell you if the breed is this or that. Labs get along with kids and they do tend to get loving.

Labs are great dogs...very loving. Calm, they are not. They have a lot of energy and the puppy stage lasts 2-3 years. The dog would certainly love all that room to run around, and since you have plenty of time, you would be able to train the dog well.

Look at your local shelters...I just adopted a black lab from our pound. He's very sweet and handsome!

They're high-energy puppies for about the first two years, but then they do tend to settle down some. They are generally very loving, but I don't know that "calm" would be the best description.

If you're looking for one that's going to be calmer, try adopting a 2 year old or so. Black labs are in Rescues all over the country, and black dogs are often the hardest to get adopted out (for whatever reason), so definitely check with Lab Rescue!!!

No, labs are NOT calm! You get the odd one of course, but as a breed they're very bouncy - lots of energy. Having lots of land is good, but he can't just be left to run around it; they need stimulation and human contact. But yes, like most dogs, they are great companions, very loving - just boisterous!

If you get a dog, take him to a vet when you get him. You need to know about vaccination, worming and de-flea regimes, and when to neuter. Best to find a vet you like early on so you don't end up as one of the silly people on here who post panicked medical questions when their dog is ill!

Go to the shelter and adopt an older dog. talk to the staff about your needs and what you are looking for. I am sure they have a dog to fit the bill--maybe you even want to consider adopting 2 dogs so they can keep each other company and really utilize that 2 acres.
