I am the PROUD owner of a puggle (pug/beagle mix) that I rescued. While I consider him a mutt, I think that people need to get off of their soapboxes about mixed breed dogs. There are just as many unscrupulous breeders of sickly, purebred dogs and just as many of those dogs end up in shelters. I've actually seen many more purebred dogs with a whole spectrum of health problems than any mutt.
As for not being able to show, that is an outright lie. Mixed breed dogs can compete in agility and obedience competitions, to name just a few. They can also work as therapy dogs or with government agencies. Most of today's "breeds" were mixed breeds at one point or another.
So, while I don't consider my dog anything but a mutt, I think that people need to stop being so self-righteous.

No, they are NOT breeds, they are produced by mixing 2 purebred breeds. And are therefore a mix, no matter what sales gimmicky name is put to it.
They will NEVER be recognized as breeds, and here is why:
Breeders or organizations wishing for FULL breed recognition must go through a process and file an application with the Foundation Stock Service with AKC...in part here is WHY these mixed breeds will NEVER gain purebred status:
"The AKC only considers adding new breeds to the FSS® or its registry upon request. The breed must be recognized by an acceptable foreign or domestic registry.
The FSS® is not open to "rare" breeds that are a variation of an AKC-registrable breed or the result of a combination of two AKC-recognized breeds. This includes and is not limited to differences such as size (over and under), coat type, coat colors, and coat colors and/or types that are disqualifications from Conformation Events by AKC breed standards. "
However, that doesn't mean you don't have a great dog that can bring you years of joy and love.
Adopt a mixed breed....don't line the pockets of a backyard breeder.
And before anyone gives me a "thumbs down" and accuses me of being a "mixed breed" hater, I happen to have 2 mixes right now and I have done and continue to do rescue...I love ALL dogs,,,,what I HATE are backyard breeders that continue to crank out mixed breed puppies when there are so many that need loving homes!

Well, I'm glad you didn't buy one from a store or a backyard breeder, but your dog is still a mutt, or if you want me to be kinder, "mixed breed." Your dog cannot be registered, shown, or breed true. You could never put your dog with another one of the same cross and get puppies that look anything like them. There is no breed standard. There is no health guarantee and no way to tell if genetic diseases predominant to one breed will show up in a mix.
Anyway, you have your pet, you love it, and as you didn't buy it, no real damage done. Make sure there isn't any additional damage. Have your pets spayed and neutered. Join the good guy team and help us stop the horrible pet overpopulation problem- 5 million animals die in US animal shelters every single year.
Call your pups 'mixes.' Keeps the dumb people from getting confused. Thank you.

They are NOT a breed - they are a mix of two (or more) breeds. They are mongrels, cross-breeds or mutts NOT hybrids. This is a definition -
HYBRID - an organism that is the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock; especially offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties or breeds or species; "a mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey"
How does this apply to cross-breeding dogs? They are the same species, canis lupus familiaris, just different breeds.
I don't have one - any cross-bred dog I have owned has been called just that!! I didn't feel the need to make up a name to justify the dog - they were great how they were.

I declare them a mutt. Although some mutts make the absolute best dogs, they are still mixed breeds (mutts). Doesn't make them any less smart, cute, sweet, nothing. They are just a mixed breed. After some years go by they may become a breed. That's how breeds begin. Somebody cross breeds and it just snow balls from there. I have Siberian Huskies. They are pure bred, but the breed was not always around. When (supposedly) the Chuckchi Indians came up with them, they were mutts(mixed breeds) then, now look. They're a very much so recognized and AKC reg. breed.

Doesn't matter how they're considered - they're cross breeds, and that's a fact. They're not hybrids either - a hybrid is a cross between two species, not two breeds.
Doesn't matter at the end of the day, a dog is a dog. Crosses tend to come with less congenital health problems too, and live longer. I just hope you didn't pay a pedigree price for a crossbreed!
Oh, and breeds are not created by crossing other breeds. They're created by line breeding to 'bring out' desirable characteristics.

You can consider them anything you want, but that doesn't make them a breed. They cannot be registered or shown according to the AKC, and that is what counts, not some made up name.
Your chi whatever may be adorable and a great pet, but it is NOT a breed, it is a mutt.
Reminds me of when I was showing one of my dogs and some yoyo decided that, because he had a very small mini dachshund, it should be shown under the Toy group- we nearly laughed ourselves into tears.
Sorry, you can't change reality, and facts are facts.

"breed" indicates purebred status.. meaning registered dogs of the same breed created the dog.
"hybrid" means 2 animals or plants of differing species were bred together... ie horse/donkey creating a mule/jackass... all dogs are of the same species... if you were adding wolf or fox to a dog you would have a hybrid
I'm sure your dog is great... I'm glad you love her... but no.. I don't considered a chiweanie to be a "breed".

NO, they are not proper "breeds" at all! They are MIXES and MUTTS, not purebreeds, ever.
A purebred is a breed of dog, recognized by a proper and reputable registry, such as AKC, UKC, Canadian Kennel Club (not the puppy mill Continental KC either). A purebred, when bred with another of it's breed will BREED TRUE... this means that you get CONSISTENT results from every litter and it is PREDICTABLE.
These "designer/hybrid" mutts DO NOT breed true. It is a BAD IDEA to promote these as breeds too. Backyard breeders are having a field day with breeding whatever they want and selling them for a big price to dumb people who don't bother to self educate. These MIXES are RARELY properly tested for genetic issues and the breeders could care less what you do with them after you take them home.
Don't support these deliberate mix breeding, as this is contributing greatly to our shelters being over flowing. How many do you think die, because instead of considering adopting a "designer" from the shelter, people invest hundreds in POORLY BRED MIXES and these dogs die instead.
Great what backyard "for profit" breeders are doing, isn't it?

they are NOT breeds, there is no breed standard, there is no breed traits, 1 chi-doxi mixed pup looks completly different from another...
they are MUTTS, bred by indiscriminate breeders and sold for high prices as "desighner" breeds.
you can find them in the shelters for a low adoption fee.
secondly, they are NOT hybrids...
a hybrid is the mix of 2 different specieis, a wolf-dog is a hybrid, a lion x tiger is a hybrid...
since all dogs are dogs no matter what the breed, by breeding 2 together you get a MUTT, not a hybrid.
please dont support unscrupulous breeders, stores and puppymills...
untill there are chiweenies being bred to chiweenies in hops of solidifying certain traits and looks as well as a set temperment, and untill they can be SHOWN they are NOT a breed.
