White onion = most traditional. It's got a sharper taste.
Some folks like to rinse it after chopping it to make it milder.
Yellow onions are a bit sweeter. Sweet onions like Vidalia, Walla Walla or red can also be used.
It's all a matter of taste.
If you use scallions, only use the white part. If you use the green part, consume the salsa right away. The green part tends to wilt & get slimey.

I always use an onion labeled "sweet". Sometimes it's Vidalia, sometimes it's "Texas Sweet". In the absence of a sweet variety, I use yellow. We're not big onion people, and I don't want the onion taste to be overpowering in anything I cook - unless it's onion rings! :)

I personally use scallions (green onions). Not only do they provide a great, not overbearing, onion flavor, but they give the salsa great color.

White or yellow. Sometimes small green onions work alone or in combination.
