For example, was Hilter a psychopath because his father beat him so much, or was it because he inherited his dad's psycho genes, and the beatings were just symptomatic of having a psycho dad?

I'm not expert in this area, but I am aware that psychopaths/ sociopaths tend to exhibit distinctive sensory patterns. They literally do not feel as much as others. So it has been suggested that they need more stimulation, more extreme circumstances, for anything to make an impression on them. And this "not feeling much" includes not having much of a conscience.

So, while sometimes we no doubt create monsters by treating them monstrously, I've got to think some of it is biological in a percentage of cases.

There are type 1 and type 2 psychopaths. Type 1 psychopaths are born. It's genetic. Type 2 develop their condition over time for many reasons.

The old nature vs. nurture argument.
I say it's a combination of both. He may have had a mental disease that caused this behavior, but his dad may have contributed and increased the likelihood of him acting upon this behavior.

Hitler was created due to the sanctions imposed upon Germany by the US after WW1. Fairly certain Hitler's father was actually a very well adjusted person who was good to his son, if I am remembering correctly.

Mix a neglectful childhood and extreme religious beliefs, and you have Hitler. There are probably other characteristics like genetics, but I think this is a fair observation.

I'd say 50% physical (chemical imbalances and the like) and 50% environmental (being put in a situation of failure then in a place of power)
