Contrary to another answer, your parents are NOT going to let you get a Rottie, Doberman, or Pit Bull. If it can't be large or full of hair - also rule out German Shepherds, Huskies, and probably Labs or Golden Retrievers.

I have a miniature schnauzer that does not shed and is about 15 pounds. Schnauzers are at a medium exercise range and love people. I would also recommend other family friendly dogs like cocker spaniels, springer spaniels, and boston terriers.

You should get a jack Russel. They are short haired and not very big. They are great companions. I have one. He loves car rides and hiking. If you like outdoor activities and have alot of energy you should get a Jack Russel. Now they are amazing dogs. Mine is very hyper but when it's time to settle down and go to bed he def does.

If you can be a pack leader, try a pit bull. They can be under 30 lbs in some lines, and they are incredibly athletic, loyal, and friendly. To research this breed, try the referenced sites.

Get an italian greyhound!
They're small, short hair, very clean, very athletic and love to run and walk but are not jumpy and hyper at home.

I'm about to get a goldendoodle from an actual breeder. With this type of animal you can get them in three sizes, the mini medium and the standard. The standard is the size of a golden retriever and the mini is the size of a mini poodle. and the good thing about these dogs are that they are non shedding for those who don't like all the hair on everything and they are hypo allergenic for those allergic. and they are adorable. they have the curliest hair, they look like teddy bears. If you are curious to what they look like just google goldendoodles. there are alot of pictures.
