Did they know space is a vacuum, and trying to reach heaven with a tower would be folly? Did they know that well before reaching space the atmosphere is too thin to breathe anyways, so you'll never get there?

God would have no reason to intervene. Their project would have been destined to fail all on its own.

But the people who made up that story didn't realize this, did they? So to them, it seemed like good story.

See what you've done here is hit the nail on the head. You have to give them a little something to go on or they won't answer. This one is simply too good for them.

the tower of babel was only a very short tower and could not have caused everyone to speak a different language. It is not only a story it is not even based on any facts that can be proved. we have traveled to the moon and back no structure on earth has even come close to outerspace so God would not have had to intervene. the story would have more merit if it said the people wanted to build it tried for a while and got bored and went back to earning a living. And by the way space is not a vacuum it just has the matter that is there very far apart. Look it up.

In Genesis 11 Verse 4 it says"Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."

The people were trying to build a building that was tall enough so that the people would not be scattered. One they could see for a far distance. They were not trying to reach God in Heaven . They were proud and making a name for themselves. That is why God confused there language. So they would spread out and populate the world not because he thought they would actually reach Heaven.

Also, the Bible's claim that it was called Babel because of the confusion of languages is false. The word "Babel" came from an Akkadian word meaning "gate of god".

According to Josephus one of the reasons why they built the tower was to escape another potential flood.
