There is a sensei in my area I'm interested in talking to about going buddhist. What do I say to him when I want to join his meditation sessions?

Also, i should add that I am not affiliated to any religion. I was never sent to church, or baptised, or anything of that nature. My parents wanted me to decide on my own when I got older about what I believed. I'm 23 now, and i've researched, I believe Buddhism seems to guide me in how I currently believe. I visited a monistary in Niagara Falls, and never experienced such hospitality as I have from the monks there. I'm just wanting to initiate a good impression and I"m not quite sure how to start with such a conversation, I don't think calling and saying "i want to join" is a very good first impression, and would be an awkward situation. I know that this Sensei(which he calls himself) is more towards Zen - Rinzai. Is this even a correct first step?

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm an American-born Soto Zen priest. You can call me Sensei. Or Reverend. But don't call me Roshi, as that is a title reserved for older, more distinguished priests.

If you came to me, I'd welcome you and give you instructions on how to sit zazen. Then we'd meditate, have a little tea and talk.

It's as easy as that.

I just showed up one day, he asked me what my name was, and showed me how to sit, and I've been hooked ever since.

Edit:

In Seattle: Sensei merely means master or teacher, and some teachers go by it. But you are right, most prefer the term "Roshi"
