I teach a preschool cooking class and one of the girls who comes is Muslim. Her mom is really nice and I would love to get to know them better. I want to invite them to go to the zoo with us (my kids are about the same age) but I was wondering if there are particular things I should know so as not to offend her. (For example, is the zoo okay?)
Also, what holidays to Muslims celebrate? Do they participate in Halloween and Independence day?

Be nice Please!

Muslims aren't at all as thin-skinned in Western countries as the media often makes them out to be. Most of them are comparatively secular, and won't get offended unless you actively offend their religion or feed their children pork or something. The zoo would be fine. We don't have Independence Day here in the UK, but many muslims participate in national holidays like the 5th of November, although some dissaprove of Halloween. If there's anything you're interested to know, just ask the parent.

Ask them about Halloween. As with Christians, some celebrate it and some don't. My kids are Muslim, and we celebrate Halloween, for the costumes, for the candy. It's not a religious holiday.

The only things I would suggest are: Wait until Ramadan is over for the zoo outing, since right now your Muslim friends are probably fasting and won't be able to eat or drink, and won't want to be walking around outdoors for some hours. Schedule the outing for sometime after October 12.

And don't suggest getting a beer. Go for sodas, water, tea, no alcohol!

Why not ask them to the zoo? If they say no then politely ask if there is a specific reason why. Find something else to do with them.

Ask them if and how they celebrate the various holidays. If they are American why should they not celebrate Independence day?*

The best way to get to know them is to talk to them. If you are being friendly and looking to understand them and their religion better then I doubt that they will take offense from your lack of knowledge of Islam.

* As a British citizen living in the US for a number of years I have been though a number of Independence days. I was once asked how we celebrated it in Britain! I was taken back by the lack of thought that had gone into the question, but I was not offended by it.

Zoo is okay, Is the Halloween is related to christianity or other religion? if the answer is no, then it would not be a problem to them.Independence day is celebrated by all muslims. Muslim celebrated 1st day of Shawal, 10th Zulhijjah, 1st Muharram, and the Prophet Muhammad birthday. It would be nice if u want to send congratulations. by the way, muslim should be nice. only bad muslims discourage peace.

You will be surprised to know that what you read or hear about Muslims is quite different from what they are. They know more about our faith and beliefs than we care to know about theirs. They revere Jesus and Mary and know that Jesus is mentioned more times by name in their holy book than their Prophet and there is one whole chapter of many verses given the name of Mary.

They have certain prohibition in food like the Jews.

They worship God onlyand acknowledge Christians and Jews with respect as the peoples of the Book, unlike idol worshippers.

Just be nice to her and invite her. As you get to know her better you two will talk more and you will learn. Are you Christian?

Muslims have no Prohibitions with going to the zoo. Or most things for that matter. They are prohibited PORK, ALCOHOL and immodest dress. And many are secular anyway.

Go ahead....make a friend, I am sure it will be welcome!

The Muslims I know are nice enough to tell you if you ask, and probably won't get offended.
