I would say a salsa is freshly prepared, whereas a chutney is cooked and matured a bit before eating. Mind you, what do I know? Only I can burn a pot noodle or overcook a salad.

It's been my experience that salsa is a lot thinner than chutney. You can pour out salsa but I don't think you can with chutney. It may also be spicier than chutney.

There may be other varieties, but the salsa I've seen and eaten all contained a tomato paste and chill peppers.

In Italian or Spanish, salsa can refer to any type of sauce, but in English it usually refers to the spicy, often tomato-based hot sauces typical of Mexican cuisine, particularly those used as dips.

Chutney, as a genre, is often similar to the salsa of Latin American cuisine, or European relish insofar as it usually involves a fresh, chopped primary vegetable/fruit with seasonings added, to be used as a condiment for another food.

Hope this helps!
