Because according to the story of the Tower of Babel, everyone was given a different language so that they couldn't communicate as punishment for trying to reach heaven.

So, would trying to learn another language be a sin?

It is not a sin, and you should be encourged to learn one. The original people who wear thrown by God from Babel were not worshipping so much as trying to get directly to God. So he scattered them and gave them different languages to speak so that they would not be able to explain how to create a zygarot (the temple style being built) ever again. But even in the days before and after Jesus many teachers spoke several languages. It is not a sin so go learn. Perhaps you can preach the Word of God to others in other languages once you are proficient.

If God didn't want you to learn languages, then why would he/she give you that 'ear?' There are many people, and you sound like one of them, that hear a language, and immediately begin to formulate the structure and grammar of it. Some say that I have that ear, though I speak only one language well - English, I also have studied Latin, Spanish, French and Italian, too. I doubt that any God reached down and confused languages because of a brick tower. Languages are formed from the commonality in identifying ideas, objects and actions.

The Tower of Babel story is from the Old Testament. The short version of the Old Testament is: the story of God's creation of man, His efforts to right us within His sight, and man's failure to please God. God was angry at the time of the Tower of Babel!

OK, so now we move on to the New Testament. Jesus comes along to reconcile us with God, He is happy with us again, and we are given a new command: to go among all nations and spread the good word. You can't do that unless you can speak other languages!

We need to love one another and your talent in communicating and bridging peoples will come in handy!

Last I checked the seven deadly or cardinal sins involve ... greed, lust, envy, gluttony, sloth, wrath, and pride. The Tower of Babel is a story of ENVY, I think, more than anything else.

Language is a purely geographical matter. GOD is omnipresent. Are you not guilty of sinful PRIDE if you believe or presume the language YOU speak now is the one and only and true language of GOD?

Our actions and the words we speak to our fellow man (words spoken in kindness, words of tolerance, words of wisdom, words of prayer and forgiveness, words of acceptance, words of love, etc.... ) are what matter - no matter the tongue. Therefore I would say the *sin* lies not in the language you speak my dear, but the words you speak.

Of course not. God gave everyone distinct languages because they were working evil together...it wasn't a punishment for SHARING the same language, mixing up the languages was a punishment for working together to make mischief!

Only if they tried to build another Tower of Babel.
No it would not be a sin.

The Bible does not say anywhere that learning another language is a sin. We are commanded to spread the gospel to everyone....we must be able to communicate with them to accomplish that.

i think the tower of Babel was an allegory, a fable if you will, about trying to outsmart God.

How could they build a building that goes to heaven? first, that would mean heaven is in space, if that was true, the building would need to be MILES high. that's not possible.

so no. I am Christian and i try to learn languages.

The sin wasn't in the language, it was in the trying to build their own tower to heaven. Heaven is a gift from God, we can't just go putting ourselves there.

The sin was building the tower in order to reach heaven, NO the speaking of languages (God himself gave the languages!).

Therefore:
it is NOT A SIN if you learn another language.

It is not a sin (English)
No es un pecado. (Spanish)
Es ist nicht eine Sünde. (German)
