You will have some penalties to pay for being late with registration, but you will keep the same personalized plate. In IL I believe they go back into the system to be reissued if they have not been renewed for 12 months.

Bring your registration and proof of insurance etc. Head over to Secertary of States offices and just re register again. You won't have to get new plates, but you will have to pay the fines for each month that you have been a driving on expired plates. (that just became a new law in Illinois) There not big fines or anything like that, I think its $10 for each month, plaus you have to pay the full amount for the sticker

As long as they are not expired for over a year you can keep the same plates
