Is your cat still in a cast??? Animals sometimes fear an unknown appliance, and until it is removed, there will be fear. Time will pass, and they will most likely get together again.

The injured cat has returned home smelling of the vets and this is what is upsetting your other cat - he no longer recognises his scent. I would suggest moving the injured cat's cage into another room for a couple of days so that he can recover in peace and quiet. During this time, the scents from the vet will wear off and he will pick up the "communal" scent of your home which will make him smell more familiar to his brother. You can also take a soft cloth like a hankie and wipe it over the cheeks of the brother, and then wipe the cloth over the injured cat, as this will help mix their scents together.

I hope that your injured cat makes a full recovery and that they are back to being friends soon.

Cat (A) with the broken leg is projecting its pain right now. Cat (B) his brother can tell something isn't right. Cat (B) also is probably afraid of the unknown thing on Cat (A)'s leg. Show Cat ( B) that Cat (A) is okay, and allow Cat (B) to sniff and maybe feel Cat (A)'s leg. I am sure Cat (B) will still be freaked out, but this might relieve some of the tensions. Remember Cat (A) is still afraid and may be in pain, so he may be uncomfy around Cat (B), and Cat ( B) is aware of it, and trying to allow Cat (A) her space.

the brother smells the cast and any meds that are inside it.

how often do you take one cat to the vet and upon returning the cat left home will hiss at the cat in the carrier even after it has been let out.

I think is the smells that the cat staying home is smelling that he is unfamiliar with.

also, (only the stong survive) attitude is at work here. the brother may be thinking his sister is sick and will ultimately fear her due to this.

when the cast comes off and sister is back on her feet and smells are back to normal, bro and sis will be peanut butter and jelly again.

you should really be keeping them apart anyway until she is quite healed. the stress put upon these two at this time is not good for either one but moreover your girl kitty has to be realxed to heal properly.

i'm assuming the cat who has a broken hip was at the vet's office... this would account for the other cat hissing at him. the "smells" from the vet is probably what the hissing is about... and now he's confined, when the other cat isn't used to that at all

i sure hope your kitty recovers well. i'm sad he's "broken"... i have a broken hip too.. ouch.

Sometimes an injury can upset the hierarchy of things in a pack or pride. This happened with our alpha dog. She had surgery and the second spot dog took her place as she recuperated. Now that she's fully healed she has assumed the alpha role again.

Once your cat heals it is likely things will return to normal after a little while.

the brother probably broke his leg in a fight

the bro may see him as weak and inferior

wait until the leg heals, they will probably scruffle and fight and then they'll be friends again

with my cats, all girls, they seem to get really upset when one another gets hurt. they cry in response and lick their sick sister for minutes, hours even, and they fall asleep together too for company.

ah... boys and girls...

good luck

It may be a temporary thing. They may need to get used to each other again. You could call your vet and see if they have any advice.
