Okay, my bad. I mean the actual HONORABLE DISCHARGE, not the DD-214. He's freaking out over this cause it's an ego thing.

THE DD-214 is the document he will need for school or work. Not the Honorable Discharge certificate. He can ask his Unit. Or access the AKO site for more information.

Your DD Form 256A or Honorable Discharge Certificate should have been mailed to you home address on record at time of you discharge.. As a former personnel specialist don t feel badly cause I never got mine either.

Check to see whether the DD-214 shows him actually DISCHARGED from active duty, as opposed to released from active duty and transferred to the Reserves.

Those who haven't completed an 8-year military service obligation (MSO)...i.e., active duty or inactive duty service...are transferred to the inactive reserves to complete their 8 years.

If he hasn't done his 8 year MSO, he won't be discharged outright (and get his discharge certificate) until he completes his MSO. His DD-214 will suffice to show his honorable release from active duty in the meantime.

If his DD-214 shows an outright discharge instead of transfer to reserve status, he should contact the personnel office of the base from which he was discharged.

He gets the Honorable Discharge certificate when he has completed his ENTIRE period of service, both active AND INACTIVE.

I signed for an eight year commitment. I signed for three years active in 1988, and five years inactive where I was never called. In May, 1996, DA sent me the Honorable Discharge, not in 1991 when I left, completing my active portion.

An eight year commitment is standard for everybody.

I thought the DD was a 212, boot out of the military.
Have you tried the Dept of the military branch in which he served or the Veterans Administratin?

If he is still in the inactive reserve, he won't get his discharge certificate, untill he is out of the IRR.

The DD214 IS the certificate of discharge. What is says is what you got.
