NUMBER 1:
You have to know if you are ready to commit to that pet for its lifetime. Cat, dog...a good 15 years. Hamster? rabbit? small birds?probably shorter.

You also have to understand the needs of that pet. Food, water, shelter....etc...Dogs are social beings and can't be left alone for long period of time. Cats are better a staying alone but there is a limit at how long you can leave your cat alone. If you travel alot and you don't have a pet sitter, not a good idea.

Puppies are like children and need a LOT of attention...Their bladders and bowels are not fully developed and you will have to get up in the middle of the night a few times. This for a few months, until it can control its bladder/bowels.

You will have to train that dog to do his doggy business outside and that too take a lot of patience. If you can't handle the odd accident on your floor or carpet, don't get a dog. If you work away from home and can't be there to bring him outside, a dog is not a good idea.

Cats are better then dogs as they don't need to be trained, they know by instinct how to use the litter box. Of course, I am referring to an indoor cat. Not fair to the cat to be left to its own device outside. Litter box need to be cleaned and you have to be able to handle that too.

Whatever pet you choose, you will have to have it neutered/spayed so it will not reproduce itself and leave unwanted pets abandoned suffering because of irresponsible owners. Also, you have to consider vaccination etc...vet care etc...will you get a Pet Care Insurance (medical insurance for pets) If your pet brake a paw, will you be able to pay to have it fixed? Pet care is very expensive. Sometime pets have behavior issues, are you ready to deal with that?

If you plan to have children, it would not be fair to euthanize the dog/ cat because of the new baby. You have to know that come hell or high water, when you make a comittment you have to honour that comittment. The best is to read about the pet you want and read about its behavior , need for care etc...Educating yourself will prevent deceptions.

Wow, a difficult question to answer. Do you own or rent? What ages are your children? Do you have the finances long term to feed and vet any pet?

If you love anything and with knowing nothing of your living situation other than you have children I'd say go to your nearest kill shelter (the shelters that give dogs and cats so many days to be there and then euthanize them) and find a very sweet friendly purring cat for you and your children.

If the cat is already spayed/neutered that's a bonus. If not you will need to call BEFORE you get the cat your local vet and get the price for a spay or neuter.

You will need shots sooner or later for the cat.

A litterbox, litter, scoop. Quality cat food. A collar. At least two bowls for food and water. Toys, toys and toys.

I would think a very good natured cat - along with children that are good natured and respectful of the cat (no tail pulling or teasing) would get along well.

Remember though you must have the finances long term for the vets for shots, any illnesses that come up, as well as food and litter and all the rest.

Good Luck and it's good that you are thinking about this before you bring any pet into your home.

Pets shouldn't be bought on a whim. You need to carefully consider this decision as it doesn't just effect you but another completely dependant living thing. Pets are fun, but if you don't have the time or money or responsibility to care for them for their enire life, please don't get one. This is why the humane society is chock full of unwanted dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. Thousands of them are put down every day unnecessarily.

Perhaps you could volunteer at your local shelter or rescue instead. You could help animals in need, get all the love and have none of the responsibility. You'll see firsthand what it takes to care for these animals & the consequences when people make a rash decision to get one.

RayRay: Omigod, that's the worst advice I've ever heard!!! Dogs should most certianly NOT be left outside to "explore" and absolutely CANNOT be left for periods of weeks!!!!! I pray you are not a pet owner & never become one.

Well it depends on what kind of pet you are looking for.
If you want it to be good with kids you are most likely going to have to train it [like a small animal] when they are young. Their attitude on people is usually if you give it enough attention.
Cats and dogs are great pets, but not extremely good first choice pets. They need extra attention and if you have enough time to give that attention to them then you can get one.

Mainly pets can be really kind to new people you just have to get it to know you before you handle it. Give them about two weeks to get to know you, talk soothing to it and let it smell your hand.
If you have been handling a different pet and then let the other one smell your hand it may try to nip at you as defense.

hope that helps(:

Puppies or kittens are good choices it depends on how your kids are. If your kids like to run , race around , or just like allot of loving get them a puppy. With kittens they love to play and are already potty trained puppies aren't. As for hamsters they only live 5 yrs then they pass away. Puppies or kittens live allot longer. Either way the choice is yours , but if it was me I would choose a puppy or kitten.

You don't give us anything to work from other than it has to be good with kids. That could be virtually any kind of pet. How much time do you have to spend with a pet for exercise, attention and training? How much space do you have? What is your financial situation in caring for a pet? What age of kids?

We don't know you, so how the heck should we know?

You aren't addressing the important aspects of your life such as

income - some pets cost a lot more to buy - and then own - than others.
lifestyle - are you a student, do you travel a lot, do you have children etc. other hobbies.
other commitments - school, job, kids, spouse
future plans - move to Europe, join the Navy etc.

When you answer these - by yourself, please, you can narrow your search for the perfect pet.

You couldn't get much more vague, could you?

Don't get a pet. You don't even know your own mind and you obviously haven't bothered to do your homework. For you to get any pet at this stage would be unfair to the animal.
